VIRGINIA — Former Iron Range teacher Ryan Ross Denzer-Johnson was sentenced to 18 years in prison Monday, Jan. 5, for two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

The 44-year-old pleaded guilty in November. He sexually assaulted an adolescent relative between March 2023 and July 2024.

Denzer-Johnson formerly taught math at Mesabi East and previously at Northeast Range. He was also involved with school robotics programs as well as a leader in his church and youth ministry.

Prosecutors argued for and got the maximum sentence. They said Denzer-Johnson abused his position of trust with the victim. They also noted that he appeared to know for some time that he had inappropriate feelings for minor females but continued to serve in youth ministry and as a teacher.

“The maximum sentence issued by Judge [Robert] Friday in this case reflects the seriousness of crimes committed against children and sends a clear message that our community will not tolerate such harm,” stated St. Louis County Attorney Kim Maki in a news release.

“We recognize the extraordinary courage and strength shown by the victim in coming forward and engaging in the criminal justice process. Their bravery helped ensure accountability and justice.”

In Minnesota, offenders typically serve two-thirds of a sentence in prison and spend the rest of the time on supervised parole.
